Population: 152,000; 54 miles (86 kilometres) north-east of London (1 hour by rail, 1½ hours by coach). Colchester is England's oldest recorded town and first Roman city. It is an attractive town rich in historic buildings, including a fine castle.
The Essex coast and many picturesque villages are within easy reach. Colchester is ideally placed for excursions to London, as well as to Cambridge, Norwich, the Constable Country and the east coast (Clacton-on-Sea).
