Gloucester

Population: 105,000; 105 miles (170 kilometres) west of London (2 hours by rail, 2½ hours by coach). Gloucester is an ancient city with a magnificent medieval cathedral and cloister, as well as being a lively modern town. The historic docks have been impressively restored to include various museums, shops and cafes.

The city is close to the spectacular countryside of the Cotswolds Hills, the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean and is well placed for a wide variety of interesting excursions: Oxford, Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon, Cheltenham, the Cotswolds, South Wales and Bristol as well as London.
