Population: 96,000; 153 miles (245 kilometres)north-west of London (3½ hours by rail, 4 hours by coach). Shrewsbury, the county town of Shropshire, is a delightful old town, picturesquely situated in a bend of the River Severn.

It has a wealth of historic buildings, including a castle and many half-timbered and Georgian houses, as well as several interesting museums. Shrewsbury is surrounded by lovely countryside and is only a short distance from the Welsh border. Suggested excursions include North Wales, Chester, Ironbridge, Stratford-upon-Avon, Ludlow and Liverpool.
